The SM Store Retailer Details

About The SM Store

SM had its beginnings in 1958, when Mr. Henry Sy Sr. opened the first Shoemart Store in Rizal Ave., in downtown Manila. The store boasted of great quality merchandise, progressive visual display, and creative salesmanship - things which were unusual in those days. By means of these variables, SM was able to obtain a loyal following of customers, which opened doors for its growth. The Firm expanded its shoe store chain in the sixties to accommodate the increasing demands of its customers. As a natural transition, SM added Ready - To - Wear attire into its lineup, if it converted into a store in 1972, with the opening of SM Quiapo. 3 years after, the shop began carrying a complete group of things - from wears to shoes to accessories to house wares, stationery and a lot more. This occurred with the opening of SM Makati, SM's first full line Department Store. In 1985, the time was right for just one more milestone. Recognizing the need of clients go beyond purchasing, the retailing landscape was changed by SM when it opened its first mall-based store - SM North EDSA. In spite of the economic and political turmoil engulfing the country in the time, SM bravely overcome the odds and began the phenomenon in the country. SM Department Store (now named The SM Store on selected malls) is the foundation of SM. SM Department Store now holds over 30 branches located at cities and states in the Philippines. SM Department Store became one of the top retail centres within the Philippines. In the 1960s, the firm expanded its shoe shop chain. It was simply among the pioneers in the brand new urban centers when it opened larger shoe outlets in the Makati Commercial Center in 1963, and in Cubao in 1967. Shoemart marked its shift from the shoe store into a total department store, in the 70s. These were SM Quiapo in Echague (now Carlos Palanca St.) in 1972, SM Makati in 1975, SM Cubao in 1978 and the very first store outside Metro Manila, SM Delgado in Iloilo City in 1979. SM positioned itself for increase in the 1980s, diversifying into the supermarket and appliance shop business. Late 1985 marked the opening of a shopping center, the SM City North EDSA. The notion was so well-received by customers, that all the stores which were opened were all full-line shops. In 2011, some new present divisions of SM Department Store were renamed as "The SM Store". First found in Agana Shopping Center. SM City Masinag was the first SM Supermall to work with the "SM Shop" manufacturer.
