Mercury Drug was set up by Mariano Que in 1945, shortly following the liberation of Manila in japan occupation. Mr. Que finally opened his first store in Bambang on March 1, 1945. He chose the name and image of the messenger and god of commerce in Roman mythology, Mercury, as his shop's name and logo to symbolize his establishment's vow to deliver quality, safe and cost-effective medications faster and nearer to the public. Certainly it was the spirit that inspired Mr. Que to start Mercury Drug. And through the years, the spirit of service hasn't wavered. Every year, Mercury Drug continues to serve individuals, dedicated to its name and its business philosophy of complete and fast customer service: "to have what you want, where you want it, once you need it, the way you need it." The business began in 1945 with a single drug-store owned by Mariano Que. The shop began cutting packaged, bulk items into single pieces and selling them independently; this practise is colloquially called tingi-tingi in Filipino. And he did meet that vow. Now, it's developed into a vast network of close to 900 stores nationwide. Mercury Drug believes it owes its success for the millions of consumers who have trusted and patronized the pharmacy chain during the years and also to the professionalism and commitment of its over 11,000 employees. Mercury Drug has developed from being only a pharmacy into a fullservice health and wellness shop offering a full complement of healthcare solutions to help promote healthy lifestyles and improve the quality of life of Filipinos. Mercury Drug takes pride in the introduction of several firsts in the pharmacy retail company - all-in an attempt to serve the individuals fulfill, please and further. Nowadays, more than 100 Mercury Drug stores are open 24 hours. It introduced the selfservice theory in drug store selling in 1963 during its first Makati shop. In 1967, it installed the country's first computerized temperaturecontrolled central warehouse and in 1969, it became the first pharmacy chain to utilize biological fridges in all its stores to maintain life-saving medicines. In 2012, it launched the very first drivethru pharmacy service within the country in its Ortigas, San Juan store. Many other 'firsts' in pharmacy retail support have been introduced through the years. "For being the pioneering spirit behind health and wellness retail industry and for spurring an industry that means that high quality medications are always available within reach of Filipinos regardless of age or economic class," Mr. Mariano Que was honored in January 2012 as the Father of Philippine Health and Wellness Retailing from the Philippine Retailers Association and Department of Trade & Business. Upon the invitation of Ayala Corporation, Mercury Drug opened its second division in-may 1963 at a developing industrial center in Makati now known as the Ayala Center. In 1965, its landmark branch was established by Mercury Drug by Plaza Miranda, Quiapo, Manila, that is noteworthy for its big outdoor LED screen. Mercury Drug opened a brand new building, MDC100, in Eastwood City, Quezon City.
